With an estimated 90% of mutual fund investors having Internet access, the time is ripe to make better use of the medium in communicating financial information, says Paul Schott Stevens, president of the Investment Company Institute. Speaking to the National Press Club, Stevens says, "The Internet offers the ultimate a la carte menu," providing investors with access to as much and as little information as they want. Stevens, echoing Internet sentiments articulated by new Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox, also urges the SEC "to revamp existing mutual fund disclosure system" to make this approach work. In addition, the ICI president notes that a survey of his group's membership indicated that 60% of investors who say they do not read lengthy prospectuses would be more likely to consult an abridged version.
