The New York Times seems to have stumbled on something involving former Refco chief executive Tone Grant. According to The Times, Grant has unloaded two valuable pieces of real estate, perhaps in an effort to keep the likes of private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners out of his pockets. The Times says that Grant, who along with other Refco executives, has been sued by Lee after he and others allegedly  failed to keep a promise to "personally guarantee" the company against any loss from inaccurate or false financial statements. We all know now what happened next, and while the former Refco biggie would not grant the Times a comment, the transfer of a Chicago apartment on tony Lake Shore Drive to Grant's wife and the "gift" of his New York digs to his next-door neighbor, who will jointly own it with a trust formed in her name, have led to some realty interesting speculation.
