According to Central Bank of China, Taiwan's offshore banking units aggregate assets declined 4.39% year-over-year to reach US$67.07 billion in Jan 2006. Of the total assets, OBUs controlled by domestic banks contributed 71% or US$47.67 billion, while foreign banks contributed 29% or US$19.39 billion. The major contributors to the operating funds of the OBUs were deposits from financial institutions and inter bank dealings together accounting for 66% of the total operating funds. As at end January, there were a total of 69 OBUs operating in Taiwan, with 41 run by domestic banks and 28 by foreign banks. Asia ranked first as the major source of the deposits at Taiwan's OBUs, accounting for a major share of 66%, followed by America with 22%. Meanwhile, around 53% of OBU funds are placed as deposits with financial institutions, 28% of the funds are in loans to enterprises, 13% have been invested in bond investments, and the balance 6% are other assets. Asia absorbed 61% of the OBU assets, followed by America having 24%.
