So what do well-heeled hedge fund professionals do with their tens and hundreds of millions? When money is no object, they tend to spend their fortunes lavishly but also spend their time involved in pursuits where money is not the object. According to a survey by Prince & Associates of some 300 hedgies with an average net worth of $197.4 million, respondents shop till they drop millions on enhancing their lifestyles. Tickling their fancy the most is art, with the average wealthy hedge fund professional spending nearly $4 million last year on fine art. Lots of dollars also went to yacht charters ($429,700), jewelry ($376,400), hotels and resorts ($304,900), watches ($271,300), fashion and accessories ($204,200), traditional spa services ($124,000), electronics ($99,300), entertaining friends ($76,700), and wine and spirits at home ($48,900). The emphasis, according to Prince, is on quality, with buyers of watches and jewelry, for example, acquiring collectible or rare items, rather than less expensive models. But HF managers also gave of their time and money to more selfless pursuits. Respondents contributed an average of $1.97 million to charity, while 69.4% of those polled often volunteered themselves to non-profit organizations in a variety of capacities.
