Maybe there is nothing for hedge funds to worry about yet, but itthe appointment of Thomas Biolsi of PricewaterhouseCoopers to a regulatory role could send a shudder down the spines of hedgies. Biolsi last month was named associate regional director of examinations in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Northeast Regional Office, and, according to David Faber of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” the new appointee brings special experience: At PwC, Biolsi headed the hedge fund regulatory compliance group for the past nine years. Faber suggests that because Biolsi, who is not a lawyer, gave up a paycheck with lots of zeros on it for government work, he may be on a mission when he takes over in June. In other words, Biolsi probably knows “all the tricks of the trade,” as Peter Lattman of The Wall Street Journal Online writes, and things could get sticky for hedge funds “seeking to steer clear of regulation and enforcement.”
