European listed asset managers are swimming in a sea of green as operating profits grew 35% in 2005, according to Morgan Stanley research. Leading the pack in profit is the 5-year-old New Star, which surged 84%, followed by ABN Amro (73%), Julius Baer (64%) and Aberdeen Asset Management and Barclays Global Investors (both 56%), rounding out the top five. Barclays took the honor for greatest turnover growth (47%), ahead of New Star with 39%. According to data provider Feri, the €365 billion inflows of new capital was the highest in five years, while the last six months of 2005 saw inflows in Europe 60% higher than those in the U.S.
