A growing number of banks are offering gift cards – the modern-day equivalent of free household goods and the like – to attract customers, who at the same time are being warned that these freebies may come with surprise conditions. MarketWatch reports that the typical card, worth around $50, may require something as simple as using it once or keeping the account active for a certain period. On the other hand, says MarketWatch, there may be hidden fees or expiration dates for the card's usage, which the Federal Trade Commission says may constitute a deceptive trade practice.
