The Securities Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service are considering requiring companies to make public more tax information, says SEC Chairman Christopher Cox, the Los Angeles Times reports. According to the Times, Cox discussed the proposal in March with IRS Commissioner Mark Everson, who says “the idea merits debate.”

Peter Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union told the Times that further disclosure could take the country “down a very dangerous path” away from tax privacy. Everson says, however, that “making corporate tax returns – or a portion thereof – public would likely improve compliance.”
