Color this fund Democrat. Blue Investment Management has announced plans to launch the Blue Fund. According to CNN, the mutual fund will invest only in companies that make a majority of their political contributions to candidates of the Democratic party and that “act blue” by supporting human rights, environmental protections and eschewing those products often associated with the Vice Fund, such as tobacco and firearms. “The Democratic investor with a political conscience has until now had no opportunity to put the investment dollars to work in a politically focused way,” the New York-based firm wrote in a prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The fund, which doesn’t have a launch date yet, boasts some pretty big companies in its portfolio, such as eBay, Apple, Lehman Brothers and Starwood Hotels. But the presence of such top companies is no guarantee of stellar performance. Blue warns that its political agenda may require it to sell a hot stock that fails to meet its requirements, and such a decision could potentially keep down returns.
