Victory just wasn’t in the cards for David Einhorn. Just a day after pledging a potential $6.9 million in poker winnings to charity, the hedge fund manager, who finished Monday in third place, was knocked out of the game, falling 15 notches. So, instead of the nearly $7 million – which one reader pointed out was just chip value, anyway – Einhorn, who lost to chip leader Jamie Gold in the World Series of Poker, walks off with $659,730 in real cash. “It’s been an absolute blast,” the president of hedge fund Greenlight Capital told Cardplayer.com. Though Einhorn is usually ultrabusy with hedge fund business, he said in the interview, “It wouldn’t surprise me to play in more poker tournaments in my life,” calling the two-week tourney “a real easy, fun way to raise money” for the charity of his choice, The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Einhorn made it to the final table, said the Web site, and was said to have a good chance to win the top prize of $12 million. Like we said, it just wasn’t in the cards.
Clarification: As mentioned in an item earlier this month, David Einhorn participated in the World Series of Poker, but he did not gamble away $6.9 million of a promised donation (that figure represents the amount in chips he held at the time). In fact, he increased his prize money by $164,943 on Aug. 9 and placed 18th in a field of 8,700.
