Smaller is better, says fund manager Roger Dent, whose relatively small small-cap fund (C$8.9 million) is making it big again this year, thanks to his "under the radar" approach. Dent, who manages the Mavrix Strategic Small Cap Fund and two other funds, in January alone saw returns jump 17.53%, on top of a nearly 45% return last year, the Globe and Mail reports. His secret: Invest in micro-cap and small-cap companies, not just in the inexpensive and currently overlooked but also those that are bound to make a bigger splash in the near future. His approach has even helped him make money in healthcare, a sector shunned by investors in recent years, which appears to be making a comeback. Dent says investments in the sector contributed to the boost in January returns for his Mavrix fund.
