European Union countries have reached a consensus on derivatives exemptions, Market Watch reports. The member nations have agreed to exempt most companies and short-term foreign exchange instruments from clearing obligations for derivatives. The EU will not hold to account companies looking to use derivatives to reduce risk. It has committed to forming laws by the end of 2012 that will require standardized over-the-counter derivatives to be cleared via central counterparties and traded on exchanges or electronic platforms.
