The surge of interest in covered bonds may be bad for the senior-debt market, with prolonged interest in the former raising the cost of the latter. New buyers, including credit funds, which previously bought senior debt, are driving the covered-bond market as an ultra-safe form of securitization. European banks face having to refinance more than €1 trillion ($1.344 trillion) of debt that comes due over the next two years.
