The European Union (EU) is planning to remove foreign-exchange products from new rules, The Wall Street Journal reports. The new rules will force derivatives onto exchange-type trading models.

The new proposal from the EU suggests that foreign exchange is different from other markets as settlement risk is reduced by the structure of the market. Europe and the U.S. are in the process of tightening regulation in the over-the-counter derivatives markets to boost transparency.
