Some of Spain’s savings banks, known as cajas, have asked the government to extend the September deadline for meeting stricter capital requirements as they struggle to attract investors. The cajas have complained that the capital requirements put them at an unfair advantage as they are unlisted companies and are tougher than requirements elsewhere in Europe.
