Kenneth Tropin, founder and chairman of Graham Capital Management, has been named Institutional Investor’s 2026 hedge fund lifetime achievement award recipient.
Tropin founded Graham, which currently has about $21 billion in assets under management, in 1994, building one of the earliest trend-following and macro-oriented hedge funds.
Over more than three decades, Tropin has helped shape the development of macro and managed futures investing into a core institutional strategy, guiding Graham through multiple market cycles while expanding its investment capabilities.
Prior to launching Graham, Tropin was president and CEO of John W. Henry & Co. He spent five years in that role, and prior to that, seven years as director of managed futures at Dean Witter Reynolds.
He has long been involved in the industry’s lobbying organization in Washington, D.C., the Managed Funds Association, where he has served as its president. Tropin was also instrumental in founding the MFA’s predecessor organization in the 1980s, helping shape the early framework for alternative investments.
At Graham, Tropin is the chairman of the firm’s executive and investment committees and a member of the firm’s risk committee. He is also responsible for overseeing the strategic investment of the firm’s proprietary capital.
Last year, as II previously reported, Graham’s discretionary macro fund — Graham Absolute Return — posted a 9.75 percent gain. Graham Proprietary Matrix, its half discretionary and half systematic offering, was up 8.62 percent.
Graham has 250 employees and four offices. Its headquarters are in Rowayton, Connecticut, and it also has offices in West Palm Beach, Florida, New York City, and London. Graham is opening a fifth office in Hong Kong this year.
Tropin will be honored at a gala on September 17, 2026 at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. You can register here.
Other award winners who will be recognized in September include II's 2026 Allocator Lifetime Achievement award winner, the 2026 Allocator Rising Stars, and Hedge Fund Rising Stars.
