Investors are excitedly anticipating a rash of public offerings from private companies with valuations over $1 billion — many of which are saddled with huge net losses in spite of the mystique surrounding them.

But for the several unicorns and other widely anticipated private companies that have gone public over the past year or so, stock performance has been a mixed bag, according to an Institutional Investor analysis.
