Tiger Cub Viking Saved by Short Bets Last Year

While the firm’s long-only fund suffered sharp losses last year, its long-short equity fund finished the year with gains thanks to savvy shorting.

Viking Global Investors finished 2018 with gains in its long-short equity hedge fund — thanks to its savvy short bets.

The firm, headed by Tiger Cub O. Andreas Halvorsen, posted sharp losses of 9.7 percent and 16.5 percent in its Viking Long Fund in December and the third quarter, respectively, according to an investor.
