Last Month Was Rough for CTAs, Trend Followers

Computer-driven hedge funds did poorly in May, with some hedge funds suffering high single-digit losses.

May was the hedge fund industry’s best month since January – but it was a disaster for many computer-driven funds, including commodity trading advisors and trend followers.

Societe Generale’s CTA Index, for example, lost 2.52 percent for the month, in contrast to the industry-wide gain of 1 percent reported by HFR.
