Activist investor Barry Rosenstein got his start working for one of the most feared corporate raiders in the 1980s. Now he tells how his hedge fund firm, Jana Partners, is teaming up with Carl Icahn to take on Time Warner.

In 1986, Barry Rosenstein, then a 27-year-old associate in the mergers and acquisitions department at Merrill Lynch & Co., realized he didn’t want to be an investment banker. Rosenstein, who had received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania just three years earlier, cold-called corporate raider Asher Edelman and managed to talk his way into an interview.
