Maligned by some as short-term agitators, activist investors bring real meaning to the words “owners capitalism.”

Active investing by those who put their own and their clients’ money at risk to buy concentrated stakes in a small number of companies is on the rise, and with good reason -- it works. In contrast to the nonconfrontational style of investing favored by traditional managers of mutual fund and pension assets, activism often involves attempts to influence the financial and operating decisions of public companies.
