Jeffrey Tucker did not grow up with animals. His father suffered from allergies, and pets were banned from the family’s Forest Hills, New York, home. But in his teens the younger Tucker started going to Aqueduct Racetrack in nearby Jamaica, Queens, with his friends to bet on the ponies.
