In 1999, Nicholas Raphaely had just finished his master’s degree in law at the University of Cambridge and was feeling mighty pleased with himself. As he and his childhood friend Jasper Lewitton, who had also just completed his Cambridge law degree, were commending themselves on having survived the rigors of the world-class university, a thought disquieted them.
