Last fall Intrawest, one of the world’s largest operators of ski resorts, was pushed into the hands of New York’s Fortress Investment Group -- by a rival hedge fund firm. In fact, Pirate Capital, a Norwalk, Connecticutbased hedge fund, was so eager to see publicly traded Intrawest taken private that it sold its holdings, nearly one fifth of Intrawest’s shares, for less than its own valuation of the stock.
