Ira Harris began his career in the pits at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1977, earning $200 a week as a currency arbitrage trader. On any given day he could be found among a sea of traders waving their arms and shouting out orders, where the market’s ebb and flow could be measured in decibels.
