Private investment firms are becoming hot investments these days. Not only are securities firms like Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley buying hedge fund firms at a rapid clip, but public-market buyers are also emptying their pockets. Since hedge fund manager Fortress Investment Group raised $634 million in a February IPO, an array of private investment funds, including leveraged-buyout giant Blackstone Group, have lined up to tap the public equity market.
