Forgive Citadel Investment Group founder Kenneth Griffin if he is feeling a bit smug these days.

Griffin was once the prodigy of the hedge fund world, having started Chicago-based Citadel in 1990 when he was just 22. But by the beginning of 2006, two years of subpar returns had skeptics wondering whether Griffin might be washed up by 40.
