Factoring in the Unknown

Investment banks are supposed to be reliable counterparties for their hedge fund clients, not unpredictable sources of incalculable risk. But Lehman Brothers Holdings’ rapid descent into bankruptcy on September 15 created a black hole in the $1.9 trillion hedge fund industry, and no one knows yet how deep it goes — or which hedge funds will be sucked into the abyss.
