New Jersey’s pension system scales back its devotion to alternative investments.

After winning a hard-fought battle six years ago to launch an alternative-investment portfolio, administrators of New Jersey’s Public Employees’ Pension System are changing their tune in the face of sharp losses and legislative criticism.

The system pulled out of four hedge funds in the first quarter and appears to have brought to a halt what was once an aggressive expansion into alternatives.
