Macro and CTA managers are struggling in part because of a lack of trends in the markets, but other well-known managers are also having an off year.

It is one thing to lag the market. But in a year when the S&P 500 surged 16.4 percent in the first three quarters, several high profile, well-known hedge fund managers actually lost money, which undoubtedly does not sit well with many of their investors who have endured mediocre performance in their hedge fund portfolios for the past two years.
