Hedge Funds Go Shopping for Consumer Stocks

A Credit Suisse ranking of the top stocks owned by hedge funds shows that firms ranging from ESL to Och Ziff to Tiger Global are sweet on retailers. They also favor technology, media and telecommunications stocks.

Hedge funds have warmed up to consumer discretionary stocks. They accounted for nine of the 15 stocks with the highest percentage of shares owned by the 50 largest hedge fund companies, according to an analysis by Credit Suisse Quantitative Equity Research.

To meet this criterion, each stock had to have been held by at least three of the top 50 hedge funds.
