SEC Trips Up D.E. Shaw and Other Hedge Funds with Rule 105

This little-known rule aimed at price fixing through short selling ensnares more hedge funds than any other charges.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday announced settlements with 22 firms, including several prominent hedge funds, accused of violating an arcane short-selling rule.

The hedge fund firms include D.E. Shaw & Co., Deerfield Management Co. and Vollero Beach Capital Partners, all based in New York, along with Overland Park, Kansas–based Blackthorn Investment Group.
