Philippe Laffont, the 47-year-old founder of Coatue Management, is a Tiger Cub through and through. He was a research analyst at Tiger Management in the 1990s, where he honed his skills as a talented stock-picker and manager of long-short equity funds, and continues to capitalize off of those strategies fifteen years later. His New York–based, technology-oriented firm, named after a long barrier beach on Nantucket, Massachusetts where Laffont has summered for thirty years, finished 2013 up nearly 20 percent, thanks to high-flying media, technology and Internet stocks, like electric carmaker Tesla Motors, online business networking company LinkedIn and online and DVD movie rental company Netflix.
