Emory University has chosen endowment veteran Srinivas “Srini” Pulavarti as its new CIO, following the retirement of longtime investment chief Mary Cahill last year.

Pulavarti will start at Emory on July 1, the university announced Wednesday. He has been the chief investment officer at the UCLA Investment Company since 2012, managing roughly $2.3 billion for the UCLA Foundation and affiliates.

Before joining UCLA, Pulavarti had spent seven years as CIO of the Spider Management Company, which invests on behalf of the University of Richmond.

“Srini Pulavarti is an innovative, forward-thinking investor with a proven track record of success,” said Christopher Augostini, Emory’s executive vice president for business and administration, in a statement. “His energy, intellect, and collaborative style in this highly complex environment have driven outstanding results for the institutions he served.”

The Emory endowment was the 17th-largest U.S. university fund as of June 2017, with $6.9 billion under management, according to the Nacubo-Commonfund Study of Endowments.

Cahill, who retired in August, had been the university’s investment chief since January 2001. Executive search firm David Barrett Partners assisted in finding her replacement.

A spokesperson for UCLA said Pulavarti’s last day at the foundation would be June 30. University chancellor Gene Block will work with the UCLA Investment Company and UCLA Foundation to establish a search committee to recruit a successor.
