Air Golub

Former American Express CEO Harvey Golub is taking on some classic chief executive retirement roles, including a senior adviser position at Lazard and a board seat at Warnaco Group.

His one entrepreneurial gig, however, sounds like a lot more fun. Last month the 61-year-old Golub, who handed the CEO reins to Ken Chenault on December 31, became chairman of AirClic, a year-old, 85-employee company based outside Philadelphia. AirClic sells bar-code scanning systems designed to allow easier Internet shopping from cell phones and other wireless devices. “After a five-minute presentation, the power of this technology was intuitively obvious,” says Golub. “I’ve committed one day a week, and I’m ahead of that schedule.” Spencer Stuart executive recruiter Dennis Carey, an early AirClic investor, brought in Golub, who in turn recruited former AmEx executive Phillip Riese to be AirClic’s CEO. The New Economy seems to suit the hard-charging Golub just fine. “Harvey will hang out with us for a day at a time,” says Riese. “People bring in problems and ideas, and he’s at the whiteboard, working them through.”
