Curry in the news

You would have thought, perhaps, that Christian Curry had had enough of the press.

You would have thought, perhaps, that Christian Curry had had enough of the press. After all, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter fired Curry two years ago after a gay magazine ran nude pictures of him, prompting him to sue the firm. Curry, who recently settled with the Wall Street giant -- publicly, his settlement was $1 million, which Morgan Stanley donated to charity, though sources say the amount was much higher -- is buying the newspaper that broke the story about his troubles with the firm. Last month Curry shelled out $2 million for 51 percent of Black Star News, an alternative weekly published in Harlem. As chairman and publisher of the paper, Curry, 26, hopes to boost circulation from 15,000 to 50,000 by year-end. “I’ve always wanted to publish my own paper,” he says. Last month he unveiled his new company, Christian Leigh Curry Corp., which will house various business ventures, including a modeling agency and a hedge fund. Curry also plans to pen a biweekly column for Black Star about any subject he wants “except Morgan Stanley.” (He can’t, because of his settlement.) His first column: a review of Gladiator, which he describes as his all-time favorite movie.
