Short-Sellers Picked Staple ETFs In Aug

Short-sellers turned to staples in the exchange-traded fund market in August.

Short-sellers turned to staples in the exchange-traded fund (ETF) market in August, Index Universe reports. Investors were looking to cover short positions on funds such as the SPDR S&P 500 ETF, the IShares MSCI Emerging Markets Index Fund and the SPDR Gold Shares. The number of SPDR ETF shares being shorted grew by about 50 percent, raising the percentage of shares short relative to the ETF’s total outstanding long float to 66 percent from less than 50 percent in July. The number of IShares ETF shares short rose nearly 40 percent after declining by a quarter in July.
