Emerging ever more rapidly from its closed-network legacy, Bloomberg is offering to support clients’ data and technology needs by making its systems and products open and accessible. Through its new enterprise products and services business, “we’re delivering a set of capabilities that feed critical data, analysis and insight directly into enterprise information infrastructures,” explains chief technology officer Shawn Edwards. “We’re doing this with a suite of products including low-latency data feeds, a data distribution platform, enterprise data management solutions and more.” Incorporating Bloomberg Open Symbology, a year-old security identification standard that literally symbolized the New York–based company’s new openness, the enterprise initiative aims to enable cost-pressured customers “to innovate and solve problems,” says Edwards, by leveraging the data, technology and tools that are at the heart of the core Bloomberg Professional service. In his current position since 2003 after stints with Bear Stearns Cos. and IBM Corp., the 42-year-old CTO leads the strategic direction of technology at Bloomberg,  which serves 300,000 subscribers worldwide.  Bloomberg's technology research and development has a team of 3,000 — nearly a quarter of Bloomberg’s total workforce of 13,000 in 185 locations.Edwards also oversees a “proprietary rapid-development environment” that shortens the product design cycle through prototyping and quick customer feedback.
