THIRD TEAM

Bin (Ben) Lin  Morgan Stanley

In this new sector, created when Financial Services was split into Banks and Insurance, Bin (Ben) Lin of Morgan Stanley debuts in third place, thanks in part to “excellent stock picking,” according to one advocate. Lin upgraded PICC Property and Casualty Co. from underweight all the way to overweight in August, as a bargain at HK$8.17. The Beijing-based insurer’s previous half-yearly results had exceeded expectations, partly thanks to streamlined expenses, and Lin predicted it wasn’t too late to take advantage of the turnaround. The shares rose as high as HK$12.28 in November before starting to slide, ending April at HK$10 — for a gain of 22.4 percent that bested the sector by 23.7 percentage points.
