Previously unranked Tak Hung (Eric) Lau shoots straight in to second place. The Citi analyst’s “regular notes and valuation sheets are very useful to track small- and midcap stocks,” declares one buy-side backer. In July, Lau initiated coverage on China State Construction International Holdings with a high-conviction buy, at HK$3.12, on the belief that the company would benefit from government policy. “China has elevated the development of affordable housing since the second quarter of 2010, and CSCI is the right play given the good track record of its management,” he explains. “Management quality is the basic element to drive a company in the right direction.” The Hong Kong–based construction contractor’s stock shot up a heart-pounding 143.3 percent, to HK$7.59, and blasted past the sector by 129.9 percentage points, through April.
