The Chilean government is considering to raise around $1.5 billion in a sovereign debt issue, The Wall Street Journal reports. The government will issue the debt on international markets later in 2011. Chile has international sovereign debt, maturing in 2012 and 2013.

Chile may use the proceeds to strengthen its sovereign wealth funds, thus avoiding bringing dollars into the country. In 2010, the country issued $1 billion in dollar-denominated bonds and another $520 million in peso-denominated bonds in 2010.
