Foreclosure filings fell 17% in January from a year earlier, according to RealtyTrac. January was the third consecutive month of declines in the number of filings after 20 straight months of increases, reports Housing Wire.

Foreclosure filings fell 17% in January from a year earlier, according to RealtyTrac. January was the third consecutive month of declines in the number of filings after 20 straight months of increases. The drop in filings, however, is more of an indication of longer lender procedural reviews in advance of foreclosures than an improving housing market, says James Saccacio, the ceo of RealtyTrac. Repossessions by lenders were also down 11% from January 2009.
