In first place for a second straight year is the BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research duo directed by Maurício Fernandes. The 36-year-old analyst is described by one portfolio manager as “the man you want to incorporate into your thought processes.” The São Paulo–based team advised clients in October to buy the ADRs of América Móvil, at $42.29, on valuation. By late July shares of the Mexico-based mobile phone operator — one of the largest network operators in the world, with more than 200 million wireless subscribers — had rung up gains of 17.2 percent, to $49.55, and led the broad market by 8.9 percentage points. “Maurício Fernandes shows a great knowledge of the industry and has very accurate estimates,” cheers one backer.
