For a fourth consecutive year — and for the seventh time in the past eight years — the sector’s top-ranked team is led by Gordon Lee. “When Gordon asks a question on conference calls or at meetings with companies, the respect he gets is palpable,” insists one money manager.
Lee, 37, is based in New York and works with analysts stationed in Mexico City and São Paulo. Last September the UBS trio upgraded MRV Engenharia e Participações from hold to buy, at R10.73, on the belief that the Brazil-based homebuilder would benefit from rising demand for low-income housing. The stock had bolted to R15.77 by late July, a gain of 47 percent that outpaced the sector by 58.5 percentage points.
