The hedge fund industry has a new global champion in Todd Groome, an outspoken financial policy expert who has served as an adviser in the monetary and capital markets department of the International Monetary Fund. Groome,

50, who led the IMF’s 2007 research into the potential threats that hedge funds posed to global markets, in January became nonexecutive chairman of one of the hedge fund industry’s leading advocacy groups, the London-based Alternative Investment Management Association. Groome’s experience at the IMF inspired his latest move: “I wanted to get more involved in shaping global policy, and AIMA is undoubtedly the most global organization representing the industry.” Groome says greater regulation is coming, but he wants to ensure that those changes don’t hurt an industry he says can be a countercyclical force for good.
