Institutional Investor’s Edward Chancellor Named Loeb Award Finalist

Chancellor’s February 2007 article “ Ponzi Nation, ” which called attention to excessive risk-taking and foretold the meltdown in credit markets last summer, is one of four finalists in in the Loeb’s magazines category.

Institutional Investor contributing writer Edward Chancellor is a finalist for the Gerald M. Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism, the UCLA Anderson School of Management, administrator of the program, has announced.

Chancellor’s February 2007 article “ Ponzi Nation, ” which called attention to excessive risk-taking and foretold the meltdown in credit markets last summer, is one of four finalists in in the Loeb’s magazines category, vying for the award against articles by Charles Fishman in Fast Company , Allan Sloan in Fortune and Michael Lewis in The New York Times Magazine . The magazines award and 12 others, along with two for career achievement, will be presented at a dinner in New York on June 30.

“The Loeb Awards are the highest honors in business journalism,” the Anderson School and the G. & R. Loeb Foundation said in their May 14 announcement. “They were established in 1957 by Gerald Loeb, a founding partner of E.F. Hutton, to encourage quality reporting in the areas of business, finance and the economy in order to inform and protect private investors and the general public.”

Chancellor, author of Devil Take the Hindmost , a history of financial speculation, and a senior member of GMO’s asset allocation team, writes the monthly Inefficient Markets column in Institutional Investor . In February he became the first II writer to win another prestigious journalism prize, the George Polk Award, in the financial reporting category ( see article ). And in April in London, the World Leadership Forum named him Best Business Journalist of the Year for Economics. Those awards were also for his prescient “ Ponzi Nation ” article.
