Some sports fans collect club pennants; Tom Hicks collects clubs. The 60-year-old co-founder of private equity firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst -- and owner of ice hockey’s Dallas Stars and baseball’s Texas Rangers -- added Liverpool FC, the storied British football club, to his roster last month. Joining forces with George Gillett, owner of the Montreal Canadiens, Hicks gazumped competing bidder Dubai International Capital and ended the five-time European champions’ three-year search for a new owner. The Texan investor has started off well, reassuring fans that a mooted ground-share deal with fierce rivals Everton FC is “out of the question.”
