When high-living former hedge fund manager Angelo Haligiannis fled New York City in January 2006, before his scheduled sentencing in federal court for swindling investors, his dash for freedom seemed anything but well planned: The 33-year-old Greek American from Queens, who had admitted to bilking investors out of at least $27 million, double-parked a Jeep Cherokee, cut off his ankle monitor and made a run for it. Many of Haligiannis’s former investors were convinced that the fraudster had hidden assets in offshore accounts and would find a way to leave the U.S., despite the fact that his passport had been confiscated. Their fears proved justified: Just last month, Haligiannis, now 35, was arrested while vacationing at a swanky resort on the island of Crete, with his wife and daughter. The former fund manager is now fighting extradition to the U.S.
