Score another one for the University of California Board of Regents and Chief Investment Officer Jagdeep Bachher.

UC has hired Eduard van Gelderen — CEO of APG Asset Management and executive board member of APG Groep N.V, which managed $493 billion at the end of March — as a senior managing director, the institution announced Thursday. Van Gelderen led APG since 2014, and previously held roles at ING Investment Management and Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch.

Van Gelderen will report to Bachher as “a member of the senior investment team,” according to the press release.

Bachher has assembled an all-star team over the last three years, including real assets head John Ritter (formerly of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas), Senior Managing Director Scott Chan (ex-CIO of Sacramento County’s public pension), interim Chief of Staff Sam Kunz (ex-CIO of Chicago’s police pension), and Chief Risk Officer Rick Bookstaber, an investment risk guru who has held senior roles at the U.S. Treasury, Bridgewater Associates, Morgan Stanley, and elsewhere.

Bachher’s team oversaw a $107 billion pool of assets as of March 31. This includes a $60 billion defined benefit pension scheme, $10 billion endowment, $14.5 billion in working capital, and, as of this year, UC’s insurance assets of $1 billion.

“Eduard is a globally recognized investor and leader with over 25 years of capital markets experience across different asset classes and liability driven investments,” Bachher said in the release. “He joins a small team of experienced investors dedicated to investing globally.”
