In third place for a second year running is Barclays’s Lawrence Marsh — “the godfather of health care distribution,” declares one fund manager. “Since he has covered the sector for so long, he has a great deal of historical context with respect to his companies.” In October 2011, Marsh, who reports on 20 companies, highlighted his overweight recommendation on Express Scripts Holding Co., a St. Louis–based provider of pharmacy benefit management services, at $38.47, predicting that the company would win U.S. Federal Trade Commission approval for its proposed merger with Medco Health Solutions of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. He was right: Regulators approved the deal in April, and by the end of August, Express Scripts’ shares had bolted 62.8 percent, to $62.62, and shot past the sector by 53.5 percentage points.
